Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma welcomed Sao Tome and Principe President Manuel Pinto da Costa on an official visit to South Africa on Thursday.

Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe and several Cabinet ministers were also present at the Union Buildings in Pretoria to receive the delegation from the small island nation.

Zuma and Da Costa would hold talks intended to strengthen co-operation between the two countries in areas including energy, water, and health.

Promoting economic ties, with the emphasis on trade and investment, was also on the agenda, a statement from the international relations department said.

Da Costa inspected a guard of honour after he was given a 21-gun salute by the SA National Defence Force.

Sao Tome and Principe is a Portuguese-speaking, poverty-stricken nation consisting of two islands off the north-western coast of Gabon.

It is listed as the second-smallest African country in terms of population. The smallest is Seychelles.
