Zuma's son sued for R1.5m over wedding

2012-05-08 09:23

Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma's son is being sued for R1.5m for failing to pay a Durban wedding co-ordinating company, according to a newspaper report on Tuesday.

Edward Zuma married Phumelele Shange in October last year. Their reception for 500 guests was held at the Tala Game Reserve near Camperdown, The Mercury reported.

On Monday an application brought by Glenwood-based Functions for Africa CC against Zuma came before Judge Kevin Swain at the KwaZulu-Natal High Court. It was postponed to later in May as neither Zuma nor his lawyers arrived.

Zuma was ordered to pay the costs of the adjournment.

Functions for Africa member Paul Mann said Zuma had only paid R1m of the R2.5m owed.

      Klipkop - 2012-05-08 09:38

      apple or coconut?

      johncarlos.biza - 2012-05-08 09:45

I wonder what he does for a living(and if he's qualified for it) to afford a wedding worth millions

      Nigel - 2012-05-08 09:51

@ johncarlos, thats a tender question

      Surfing - 2012-05-08 09:59

J-Man, you mean the drop does not fall far from the shower.

      Frank - 2012-05-08 10:01

Indeed! The question is though, how can anyone in their right mind still do business with these robbers? It is a given that you'll have to take them to court to try and recoup some of your losses and the only way you might accommodate them is 100% upfront with an additional 50% breakage deposit. Bar those Forest, run!!

      Janice - 2012-05-08 10:05

How bloody typical!!! They assume they can get away with anything! Makes me SICK!!!!!

      Kato - 2012-05-08 10:08

That's one of the benefits of being the president's son...u get way with everything or the state pays....i bet if any of u News24 Readers was a president your sons wd do the same....

      Bryan - 2012-05-08 10:10

How does he afford a wedding that costs R2.5 Million?? Oh wait.. I forgot.. He is the presidents son, must have won a few tenders over the past few years! How stupid of me!!

      Alan - 2012-05-08 10:20

so if the apple is rotten J-Man, what does it say of the tree?

      Shirley - 2012-05-08 11:39

Obviously hasnt had a scoop of gravy for a while!

      Juan - 2012-05-08 15:18

@Kato you've got it wrong my friend. Most of us value ETHICS over greed and theft. Speak for yourself and your president.

      Greg - 2012-05-09 08:32

Just increase the petrol price again as a special levy for all Zuma weddings!!

      Christopher - 2012-05-09 09:20

I am sorry(not really) but any person involed in business dealings with these kind of people should not be so amazed when they do not pay them.

      nasheenar - 2012-05-09 14:02

Why in Gods name would anyone do business with them???????

  • Peter - 2012-05-08 09:32

The wedding, the adjournment, Zumas lawyers and if he is forced to pay the 1.5m will no doubt be coming out of us tax payers pockets... sick of this

      Bob - 2012-05-08 10:17

Peter, exactly mate, we will be paying for this, agree with you absolutely sick of it, if this bunch of criminals get voted in the next election I just don't know what is going to happen, we just can't continue down this road.

      Jan - 2012-05-08 17:51

It will be paid from the Arms Deal Bribe money

  • Sharon - 2012-05-08 09:34

Surely this company must realise that it is an honour to be chosen by the Zuma clan! If they think that they will be paid, they are seriously deluded. Some people are just soooo important, they don't need to pay for anything. They are far better than us peasants.

      Pieter Mulder - 2012-05-08 09:40

O yes. Its called appearance fee. Zuma didn't even charge them. Scammers!!!!!

      Clifford - 2012-05-08 10:21

No Doubt that they will steal the money from the Taxpayers to settle this S#!T.

      Alan - 2012-05-08 10:21

Whaahaah Sharon. Yeah - and look at all the Free publicity the company is getting too!

      Junebugg - 2012-05-08 10:25

My Zulu is not on point but i bet the translation of the word "Zuma" to English is "Corruption" by the looks of things

      Wesley - 2012-05-08 11:11

Let this be a lesson to all companies. If the surname is Zuma, 100% deposit before service

  • Pieter Mulder - 2012-05-08 09:37

2.5 mil wedding. These high people irritate the crap out of me. The whole country is suffering while they spend such money. Oops, just having it for free!!!!!!!

      Alan - 2012-05-08 10:22

eish - funerals for Municapal Nobodys (with a free party afterwards) cost the taxpayers similar amounts!

      Pieter Mulder - 2012-05-08 10:31

      Eish. Non profit I presume.

      Bongani - 2012-05-08 11:09

Hey Pieter how is FF+; ever since they made you deputy minister of agriculture you have been quiet. Government money is nice neh?

      Jacqui - 2012-05-08 12:07

What do you think the engagement ring cost, not to mention the bridal clothing?. This wedding cost millions and they probably waved as they drove past the shacks in their gleaming expensive cars. Yuck.

      desertratbkf - 2012-05-08 16:51

How many shacks could this money have replaced? Its hateful what this so called government are doing! But carry on voting for them, sad to say, you deserve what you get! There ARE other options!!!!

      shooshyu.tu - 2012-05-08 16:58

The food bill was inflated by at least R500k to accommodate Makhulabuse's penchant for gastronomic over indulgence.

  • andrew.arde - 2012-05-08 09:38

This means the wedding cost was R5000.00 per head!! WTF?

      Rohin - 2012-05-08 09:52

yeah, what do i have to do to get on to that guest list. must have been fun.

      Deon - 2012-05-08 10:01

  • Arthur - 2012-05-08 09:52

Daddy will bail him out with tax payers money I guess, I'm sure there are plenty of "slush funds" lying about that they can utilise. Since they've milked the middle working class to the max, maybe they can come up with a new tax for the poor to pay off the wedding bill, it's not like they have to eat EVERY day surely...

  • Ryan - 2012-05-08 09:55

    is anyone surprised?

  • Msizi.nyalungu - 2012-05-08 09:58

  • Tim - 2012-05-08 10:02

he was suppose to follow his father by using the traditional way of taking a wife not the western style as that is evry expensive.

      Marion - 2012-05-08 10:29

@btnkabinde - this is totally over the top even by western standards. Only filthy rich people would have a wedding of this magnitude. Disgraceful to do it in the first place. B***dy disgraceful to do it if you can't afford it.

      Lucy - 2012-05-08 15:16

what i cant understand is the fool father has to all extent and purposes maintained his traditional ways with many wives lobola etc etc. fine although its us peasants who are paying for this. but how come frigging father and frigging son also want to cut it both ways and do the western thing too - so now they have the african way...western way...what next the eastern way in bed with your commie buddies...wonder what that way will cost us too. idiots

  • Deon - 2012-05-08 10:02

For some people you ask 100% upfront.

      Alan - 2012-05-08 10:24

      Selective hypocrisy keeps them silent.

      Gert - 2012-05-09 08:40

      Marion - 2012-05-08 10:35

It's actually astounding how many people went from impoverished to very wealthy in the space of 18 years. But then I've heard it said that the poorest of the poor like their 'leaders' to be rich. Gives them something to aspire to. Ha!

      Nolwazi - 2012-05-08 12:02

      ANC sucks! Ag shame.

  • Marion - 2012-05-08 10:25

Iniquitous to have an over the top wedding when you know you do not have the money to pay for it. Wonder where he got the R1 million 'deposit'.

      Jay - 2012-05-08 10:50

@Marion, Now that question about the DEPOSIT is the MOST PERTINENT & KEY Question / Comment of the day! That is exactly what SARS should be looking into! Be assured a Whole New Can of Worms will be Opened....... I Rest My Case!

  • Paul - 2012-05-08 10:39

Riddiculas amount of money to spend on a wedding anyway. Typical behavior coming from anybody connected to the ANC and disgusting that it comes from the presidents son. If i were Zuma i would be ashamed.

Nouveau riche in the worst possible sense of the word. (Except this is now nouveau bankrupt by sound of things).

      Gert - 2012-05-09 08:51

@ sheik and if he can't afford a wedding where is he going to stay --move in with daddy??? oh-oh I can see another mansion being built close to that zuma private hospital and other mansions. maybe the wives of his kids can also classify for over a million a year state salary.

  • georgebrightons - 2012-05-08 10:40

Zuma's son and not ANC' son. ANC distances itself from private matters. Let us refrain from provocations against the ANC or any political parties. Private matter is not a political matter.

      Bennie - 2012-05-08 10:43

Do you honestly believe this tripe you wrote??

      Marion - 2012-05-08 10:50

@Bennie - why should the ANC (or even Zuma for that matter) be blamed for the sins of a member / son?

      Sango - 2012-05-08 10:56

George i like your comment not everything is about the anc. Just because his father is a president don't mean ANC is involved in his wedding people need to grow up.

      Piet - 2012-05-08 11:09

George have a green Smartie! ANC cadres, deployed all over the show!

      Sango - 2012-05-08 11:17

@bennie do you believe the rubbish you just wrote?

      Jacqui - 2012-05-08 12:12

George if it wasn't for the ANC the Zuma clan would have been goat herders.

      Lucy - 2012-05-08 15:24

      what you smoking george...???

      00Kriek7 - 2012-05-09 09:02

George, you should understand that he's ethics and reasoning are both obtained from his father and therefor shows how they work behind closed doors. And like numerous users on this post comment, if your son needed financial aid, you as father will obviously give a hand. So Zuma WILL make the unethical choice of paying for that, I’m very sure of that!

      00Kriek7 - 2012-05-09 09:04

And seeing as the ANC appointed him as president over the whole country, they will also be victims of constant mockery for their idiocy!

      Sango - 2012-05-08 11:30
