Port Elizabeth – A baby girl who had been left in bushes in Walmer, Port Elizabeth, was found after her cries were heard by passersby, Eastern Cape police said on Wednesday.

A couple walking back from church heard the six-week-old girl's cries and found her wrapped in a blanket, with a bag lying next to her, said police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu.

"Inside the bag was the baby’s medication with the mother’s name written on it. The couple took the child to the Walmer police station and reported the incident," said Naidu.

The child was taken to a place of safety. Police are investigating a case of child neglect and child abandonment.

The circumstances were still being investigated.

Naidu said that officers followed up on the particulars on the labelled medication at a clinic and were now looking for Phelokazi Gxoyiya.

It is believed she is living in Addo.

"All children have the right to protection. They have the right to survive, to be safe, to belong, to be heard, to receive adequate care and to grow up in a protective environment," said Naidu.

She appealed to anyone who could assist in tracing the mother.
