Bloemfontein - Accident reconstruction experts have been sent by the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) to investigate the bus crash which resulted in the deaths of 10 soldiers on the R712 near Golden Gate in the Free State on Friday.

Several others were injured when a military bus transporting 40 people overturned on the winding road in the Golden Gate Highlands National Park nature reserve.

RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane in a statement said the exact cause had not yet been established and investigators are at the accident scene.

"Motorists are advised to use alternative routes as the road will be closed for an extended period of time while investigations are underway," he said.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said paramedics arrived at the crash site shortly before midday on Friday.

Nine people died on the scene. Several passengers sustained injuries ranging from serious to critical. They were treated at the scene and taken to local hospitals.

The 10th person died soon after arriving at a hospital.

According to SANParks, the bus was transporting the SANDF employees to Basotho Cultural Village for an event.
