Pretoria -  The University of Pretoria (UP), its workers and students reached an agreement over outsourcing on Wednesday.

The university would employ the workers as their contracts expired and top up their salaries in the interim, it said.

This was in line with agreements reached at institutions including Wits University, the University of Johannesburg, and the University of Cape Town.

Representatives of contract workers, students, organised labour, and university management, who formed part of the UP commission on insourcing, reached the agreement.

The university was expected to re-open on Thursday.

Contract workers had been protesting since early this month demanding permanent employment. The protests disrupted registration and resulted in several universities closing.

#OutsourcingMustFall spokesperson Vusi Mahlangu said the agreement would see UP workers get paid a minimum of R10 000 a month.

He said UP would give workers full benefits, including medical aid and for their children to study for free. They would get a minimum wage of R10 000 by 2018. This year, their salaries would immediately be increased from R2 500 to R5 500.

He said the movement would continue its protests at Unisa and the Tshwane University of Technology.

"We are just drawing inspiration from the victory of the workers at UP," Mahlangu said.
