Johannesburg – Temporary teachers in Limpopo who have not been paid since April will get their salaries later this month, Sadtu said on Friday.

Outstanding payments for around 269 teachers would be processed on 14 September, the SA Democratic Teachers Union said in a statement.

The decision was made at a meeting between Sadtu, the Limpopo Department of Education and the provincial Treasury.

All other outstanding payments due to teachers, including the housing allowance, would be paid before the end of September.

Sadtu said it expected the two departments to set up a task team to handle possible obstacles in an attempt to expedite the process.

Treasury further gave the department permission to extend the contracts of 1 705 temporary teaching posts.

Last month, the union threatened to stage a protest if the teachers were not paid. Sadtu said the teachers were not paid in an attempt to "control budgets".
