Bloemfontein – After sustaining "terrible facial burns" as she tried in vain to save her 3-year-old twin sisters from the flames of a school bus that caught fire on Friday, 10-year-old Thato Mofokeng was now receiving help.

A News24 reader who wishes to remain anonymous said when she heard the news, she was heartbroken and wanted to help.

“I really just want to offer help for the 10-year-old. she is just a hero in my eyes and she is brave for doing what she did, trying to save her family,” she said.
She said she aims to assist the family with monetary donations.

“I would like to send the family R500 towards her treatment as well as remain in contact with her dad to contribute in the future as well."

Their father Sifa Johannes Mofokeng said he was grateful for the contribution.

“I feel pain that [Thato] is still in hospital and she is feeling all the pain of losing her sisters after trying to save them.

“However, I am glad someone saw a need and is willing to help out where they can. We appreciate the efforts,” said Mofokeng.

Refiloe and Reneiloe died, while their brave sister sustained "terrible facial burns" as she tried in vain to save their lives.

Mofokeng told News24 when he arrived at the scene, he found his twin toddlers had already died.

Five of his children aged 3, 10, 15 and 20 were in the bus transporting 22 children and travelling from a crèche at the Sibonakaliso Combined School between Warden and Harrismith when it caught fire on Friday afternoon.

Mofokeng, who is the school's governing body chairperson, said it was hard for his wife to cope with the loss of her children.

“Whenever she thinks about them and what happened, she cries all the time,” he said.

The funeral would be held at the Roman Catholic School in the Harrismith district on November 21.
