Johannesburg - The case against the man accused of killing his 6-month-old baby boy was postponed in the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court on Friday, police said.

Marthinus Pelser, 22, appeared in court barefoot and wearing the same clothes as the day of his arrest, Captain Kay Makhubela said.

He was arrested in Honeydew on Wednesday.

The baby's mother arrived home from work at 19:20 on Saturday, after leaving him in the care of his father for the day.

"When she asked her husband where the child was, he told her that he was sleeping in the bedroom. It is alleged that when she went to check on the baby, she found the child wrapped in a blanket and not breathing," Makhubela said.

"Paramedics were summoned and they certified the child dead."

The infant was found to have sustained head injuries and burn wounds. Pelser allegedly went on the run in his partner's Kia. He was caught in Strubens Valley after the car ran out of petrol.

Pelser posted on Facebook on Saturday: "Never push a man to violence, who has been waiting for an excuse to use it."

The post was accompanied by a picture of a creature with a demonic appearance.

Pelser would remain in custody and appear in court again next Wednesday.
