Johannesburg - An alleged car thief was killed when police and a local security company foiled a robbery at a car dealership in Edenvale on Sunday morning.

"On Sunday morning at about 03:00, suspects overpowered the security guard at an Edenvale car dealership and tied him up," said Captain Kay Makhubela.

The robbers then forced their way into the dealership to get keys in order to steal the new vehicles parked in the showroom.

"As the suspects exited the company in three bakkies, the SAPS and a local security company managed to block their exit."

Makhubela said the robbers fired at the officers and a shootout ensued. One of the alleged robbers was shot dead and four others were arrested.

The arrested men, aged between 20 and 25, will appear in court soon to face charges of business robbery and attempted murder.
