Mthatha - An alleged rapist has been arrested in Mkhonjane Village in Butterworth after his victim alerted the community, who then chased and caught him, Eastern Cape police said on Sunday.

“The victim was sleeping alone at her home when she was accosted by the suspect,” said Captain Jackson Manatha in a statement about the crime which took place on Saturday night in the village located in the Kei Bridge area.

After the attack, the woman told other people who brought the suspect to book.

“The suspect was not assaulted by the community,” Manatha said.

The man, aged 35, was then arrested and is due in the Butterworth Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

“Butterworth Cluster Commander, Brigadier Trevor Mey thanked the community for their efforts in combating crime and in their assistance in apprehending the criminals.”
