Bloemfontein – Two of three men accused of murdering a Free State police officer have been released on a warning by the Botshabelo Magistrate's Court, the Hawks said on Thursday.

Sello Petlane and Ernest Kgake were released on Wednesday, spokesperson S'fiso Nyakane said.

While the two could not be linked to the murder of Constable Johannes Putsoeli, the case against them had not yet been withdrawn. All three were expected back in court on October 20.

Their only link to the murder was Putsoeli's cellphone, said Nyakane.

The Hawks were still investigating the third suspect, aged 24, who was arrested last Thursday. He was serving a two-year sentence in Winburg prison for an unrelated robbery.

Petlane and Kgake, aged 25 and 32, were arrested last month.

Putsoeli, 37, was killed in February this year. He was found in a field near the Kaizer Sebothelo Stadium in Botshabelo with a stab wound to his upper body. He was allegedly robbed of his service pistol, cellphone and wallet.
