Durban - An alleged hijacker was shot and killed and an accomplice wounded in a shootout with police in Verulam, north of Durban, on Sunday morning.

Reaction Unit South Africa spokesperson Prem Balram said that shortly before 03:00, security officials received a report of gunfire near the Verulam Market.

"Reaction Unit South Africa was dispatched to the Verulam Market on the corner of Ireland and Wick Streets after receiving reports of shots being fired. Upon arrival it was established that five suspects hijacked a taxi from Ntuzuma," he said.

"While on patrol in the Verulam CBD, policemen spotted the taxi and a shootout ensued between officers and the suspects. Two suspects were shot, one fatally while his accomplice was critically injured after being shot in the head," Balram added.

The critically injured man was treated on scene for his injuries before being transported to hospital.
