Cape Town - A man allegedly involved in an attempted housebreaking died, and a number of police officers were injured, when their cars crashed in Muizenberg, Western Cape police said on Monday.

A security company had chased after a red Mercedes-Benz a housebreaking gang allegedly used on Saturday, but lost sight of it, Captain FC van Wyk said.

The getaway vehicle collided with a police vehicle from Ocean View on Sunrise Boulevard. Van Wyk said there were five police officers in the white Toyota Hilux.

One was seriously injured, two sustained moderate injuries and two others had minor injuries.

They were rushed to hospital. Two were later discharged.

The Mercedes-Benz, which was later found to be stolen, had four occupants. One was declared dead on the scene. The others were taken to hospital under police guard.

Cases of culpable homicide, attempted housebreaking and possession of a stolen motor vehicle were under investigation.
