Johannesburg - A grieving Katlehong mother said on Tuesday she was battling to accept that her son was accused of killing three members of his family.

"I am in so much pain and I drink to escape from all the hurt," the 21-year-old's mother said outside the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court.

She was crying as she came out of the court and family members comforted her.

He and his co-accused may not be named. The other boy is 17 and both are related.

The State requested a postponement to receive the indictment.

Two of Thembi Letsoalo’s daughters, her niece, and six-month-old granddaughter were attacked - allegedly by two boys aged 17 and 21 - in her Katlehong home, on the East Rand, in December.

One of the daughters, Nthabiseng Letsoalo, aged 23, survived. Her sister Lerato Letsoalo, aged 18, cousin Priska Movit, aged 23, and Movit’s six-month-old baby girl Bokamoso Movit, were killed and put in a bathtub of boiling water.

At their last court appearance, the State said the DNA results were available and the investigation had been completed. The tests were conducted on the bloodied clothing the two accused allegedly wore and on the knife used in the attack.

Both accused would remain in custody until their next appearance on 20 April. The boy was at a correctional centre for children in Soshanguve.
