Durban – Two men accused of killing police officer, Captain Dumisani Mhlanzi, are to appear in KwaMaphumulo Magistrate's Court on Monday.

Mteleseni Mathonsi, 26, and Bheki Sibiya, 39, made a brief first appearance in court on Friday, when the case was postponed.

The men were arrested at a hostel during a multi-disciplinary operation on Wednesday evening. A shootout ensued during the operation, which resulted in three additional suspects being shot dead.

Their arrests come after a group of men robbed a shop in KwaMaphumulo on February 23. As the gunmen fled the scene, they opened fire on Mhlanzi who was off duty at the time

The 54-year-old cop was rushed to a hospital where he later died. He was buried in Umsinga in KwaZulu-Natal this past Sunday.

Minister of Police Bheki Cele commended the arrests.

"Police action will continue to be tough and hard on dangerous criminals, they must retreat or regret; the energy levels of police action have been reloaded from that of a smaller engine to top notch engine capacity," said Cele.

National police commissioner General Khehla John Sitole also applauded the speedy arrests.

"In order to show that we are stamping the authority of the state, our first priority is to completely stop the killing of police officers and to speedily bring police killers to book," he said.
