Pietermaritzburg - Quick work by a private security company led to the arrest of an alleged rapist four hours after the crime was committed in Thornville.

Detectives from Magma Security, responding to a desperate plea for help from a Thornville client, closed in on the suspect on Monday night.

They arrested the man only fours after he allegedly raped a young woman on the roadside.

According to Magma Security director Shaheen Suleiman, the woman — believed to be in her early 20s — was raped in a secluded area on the roadside near a Magma client’s residence.

It is believed the woman had just got off a bus and was walking home when the rapist held her at knife-point and dragged her into bushes on the roadside, where he allegedly raped her.

The victim was also robbed of her cellphone.

The woman then approached the nearest home, beaten up and battered, and asked for help.

Suleiman said that when his detectives received the call, a team assembled and immediately rushed to Thornville.

Following up on information from the community, the detectives traced the alleged rapist and nabbed him while he was walking home, just hours after the alleged crime occurred.

The woman’s cellphone was also found in his possession.

Pietermaritzburg police spokesperson Mthokozisi Ngobese confirmed a case of rape is being investigated by Thornville police and one suspect has been arrested.
