Bloemfontein – A Free State man who allegedly murdered his wife killed four more people while trying to escape from police.

The 22-year-old allegedly strangled his 27-year-old wife in their home in Namahadi, Qwaqua, on Thursday and fled with their five-year-old daughter, Captain Phumelelo Dhlamini said on Saturday.

Traffic police in Senekal stopped him for speeding. He allegedly tried to bribe the officer to let him go. The officer refused and he sped off.

Marquard police were contacted and they set up a roadblock on the R707. He failed to stop and collided with a car that had Lesotho licence plates, killing four of the occupants, and damaging police vehicles.

The man and his daughter sustained minor injuries. He was taken to the Senekal hospital under police guard.

He is expected to appear on Monday in the Marquard Magistrate's Court on charges of murder, culpable homicide, and bribery.
