Bloemfontein – Two American citizens were killed and three others injured when a bus collided head-on with a light motor vehicle on the N1, 35km south of Bloemfontein, on Friday evening, paramedics said on Saturday.

The Americans were in the light motor vehicle and were killed instantly, spokesperson for Trauma Response Africa Stanley Schimper said.

The bus driver and stewardess were trapped and had to be freed from the wreckage using Jaws of Life.

The assistant driver also sustained serious injuries, but was not trapped, said Schimper.

None of the passengers in the bus sustained any injuries.

Traffic on the N1 was disrupted for some time while rescue and clean-up operations were in progress. Various services attended the scene.
