Bloemfontein - The ANC will help the families of its members killed in a bus crash while returning from the party's manifesto launch in Port Elizabeth, the party's Ekurhuleni regional chairperson Mzwandile Masina said on Monday.

"As the ANC you have to find ways of ensuring we support the families in any way possible,” he told News24.

“We don't want to put monetary issues at the forefront of things, but we want to argue that at a humanitarian level the ANC will work very closely with the families to make sure we at least give our comrades a very good send off."

Eleven people were killed and more than 50 injured in the accident between Winburg and Ventersburg in the Free State on Sunday.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has sent accident reconstruction experts to the scene.

Masina said the party in Ekurhuleni met six of the families on Sunday. They were still busy contacting the remaining relatives.

The names of the deceased were expected to be released later on Monday.

Masina said the survivors were taken to five different hospitals in the area, but would be transferred to Gauteng so they could be closer to their families.

Masina could not confirm reports that some survivors had claimed the accident happened when the two bus drivers were trying to change positions while the vehicle was moving.

"For now our focus is on those who have passed on and those still in hospital. Once authorities have investigated they will come back to us with a proper report."

RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane could not confirm the reports and asked that investigators be given time to complete their work.
