Cape Town – The 17-year-old son of Western Cape ANC member, Caroline Witbooi, has been shot dead in Elsies River, close to where the party was conducting door-to-door campaigns.

“The shooting on Friday happened about two kilometres away from where we were campaigning,” ANC whip in the Western Cape legislature, Siyazi Tyatyam, told News24 on Sunday.

He said he heard two to three shots. “Then we got a call to say one of the comrade’s sons was shot," Tyatyam said.

Events leading up to the shooting were not immediately clear, but Tyatyam did not think it was related to the upcoming local elections or politics.

While there, young residents had told him they believed it was gang-related, he said.

Western Cape police confirmed an unknown suspect shot and killed the 17-year-old boy in Bourne Road. No arrests had yet been made.

“We will return to the area to continue our campaign,” said Tyatyam. “We must give hope to the people and I think ANC can make a change.”
