Durban – The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal announced on Monday that it had decided to recall four of its MECs.

It also announced that the vacant transport portfolio would be filled by Thomas Mxolisi Kaunda.

During a media briefing in Durban, provincial secretary Super Zuma announced that Sport, Arts and Culture MEC Ntombikayise Sibhidla-Saphetha, Economic Development MEC Mike Mabuyakhulu, Education MEC Peggy Nkonyeni, and Agriculture and Rural Development MEC Cyril Xaba had been recalled.

Themba Mthembu becomes the new agriculture MEC, Sihle Zikalala takes over economic development, Bongi Sithole-Moloi moves into the sport portfolio, and Mthandeni Dlungwane is the new education MEC.

"Change in the leadership is necessary in the following departments. The premier has been mandated to come up with a determination on how to improve these departments."

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Willies Mchunu, who recently replaced axed premier Senzo Mchunu, had been tasked with reshuffling the cabinet.

"We need to make sure that government remains stable and that it gives an opportunity to other leaders to lead," he said, adding that as premier, he urgently needed someone to step in at the department of transport.

"That position has been vacant for some time and there is one person that has worked in the portfolio and in the department, and has participated in all - Thomas Mxolisi Kaunda. He is the most obvious candidate."
