Durban – The African National Congress in KwaZulu-Natal retained its seat in the Umdoni municipality’s ward 18 by-election held on Wednesday, the Electoral Commission of SA (IEC) said on Thursday.

IEC spokesperson Kate Bapela said the party retained the seat it won in last year’s municipal elections, increasing its margin to 73.85% of the votes cast compared to last year’s 64.56%.

“Voter turnout yesterday (Wednesday) was 50.92% compared to 64.56% in the 2016 municipal elections,” she said in a statement.

Doreen Nozipho Hlongwa of the ANC is now the new councillor. The seat became vacant after the death of an ANC councillor.

The ward was contested by the ANC, Inkatha Freedom Party, Economic Freedom Fighters, National Freedom Party and African Mantungwa Community.

ANC KZN spokesperson Mdu Ntuli said an unadorned truth conveyed by these results is that the ANC continues to be the only most trusted organization in our province.

“We accept this outcome with humility informed by our long held view that it is an honour to serve our people, therefore as revolutionaries we have a sacred responsibility to place the aspirations of our people at the top of our agenda for social transformation,” Ntuli said.

The ANC also retained seats in Mpumalanga and the North West during Wednesday’s by election, the commission said.

Jacob Thandizwe Duma won ward 6 at Emakhazeni municipality in Mpumalanga by 79.77%.

Sello Lucas Moekeletsi walked away with victory in ward 10, Moretele Municipality in North West with 62.16%.
