Cape Town - The ANC had to create a new Twitter account after its old account was hacked in an act of "mischief", spokesperson Zizi Kodwa said on Saturday.

''Our old account was hacked,'' said Kodwa after astonished observers spotted a tweet by: @MyANC_ that read: ''If you don't support Cde Jacob Zuma, we do not want your votes! #Elections2016''

''We have created a new account,'' Kodwa confirmed to News24 following explanatory tweets on the new handle @MYANC, in full capitals and without the underscore.

“@MYANC it has come to our attention that some mischievous characters have created a new Twitter account using our previous account handle (@MyANC_)

''Our new handle, as from yesterday, 8 April 2016, is @MYANC (without underscore),'' the party continued.

''We reject, with the contempt they deserve, the disturbing views as posted on the parody account, purporting to be those of the ANC.''

Kodwa said it had been reported to Twitter, and rejected the possibility that it might have been one of their own behind the message.

''It is not possible that it will be an insider,'' he said.

The party regarded it as an attempt at deliberately distorting its message and defocusing them on their campaigning.
