Pietermaritzburg - Rocks were thrown at DA mayoral candidate Mergan Chetty’s motorcade while he was conducting campaign visits on Saturday.

Chetty said the motorcade had been positively received across Pietermaritzburg until they reached Ward 15 in Imbali, where a group blockaded the road, and pelted vehicles with rocks, telling the convoy to turn around.

“The mob of ANC supporters threw rocks on our cars. One man was wielding a chainsaw and damaged one of our vehicles. My main concern was for the safety of those who had been travelling with me. We want to thank the traffic officials and SAPS who managed to get the crowd under control to allow us to pass through the area,” he said.

Footage from scene showed a hostile crowd gesturing to the convoy to leave the area and turn back, while one man ran ahead of the DA vehicles, pulled down his pants and exposed his buttocks to passengers in the vehicle.

“Fortunately no one was injured, but sadly some of our vehicles were damaged. We can’t have people behaving in this manner 22 years into democracy.

“The ANC has failed to inform the people in Msunduzi of the peace accords amendment we signed as the city with the IEC, in which we agreed that there would be a freedom of movement to reach our supporters,” he said.

Chetty said that a report was lodged with the IEC and a case opened with the SAPS.
