Cape Town – The Western Cape ANC is trying to sneak Marius Fransman back into the fold through the back door, the DA said on Thursday.

The ANC dismissed the DA's claims as empty politicking.

DA Western Cape deputy leader Bonginkosi Madikizela said they were concerned about the continued secrecy around Fransman's position in the party.

"There has been no explanation on why the charges against Fransman were dropped and whether he will be reinstated as the Western Cape chairman. The DA believes the ANC is trying to sneak him in through the back door and that is why they have yet to reveal their ethics committee's findings against him," he said.

The ANC provincial leader was asked to step down earlier in the year pending an outcome of an investigation into sexual harassment charges against him.

Awaiting direction

The National Prosecuting Authority dropped the charges in May, due to a lack of evidence.

Madikizela said there was no clarity on whether Fransman would return to chair the party or whether he was still a member of the provincial legislature.

ANC provincial spokesperson Yonela Diko said the party was still awaiting direction from its national executive committee. The process included the work of the integrity committee and its recommendations to the NEC.

"Until then, there is no change on the well-known position of the chairperson, that is, being asked to step aside," he said.

He accused the DA in the Western Cape of using Fransman as the centre of its campaign for the local government elections on August 3.

The DA intended asking for clarity on the dropped charges from the NPA.
