Johannesburg - The ANC in Mogale City is calling for a council meeting to elect a new mayor who will "immediately lead in stabilising the city".

The party has slammed the DA-led coalition government in the municipality, saying governance and service delivery have collapsed since the party came into power in August.

The DA announced on Thursday that Mayor Lynn Pannal resigned due to ill health.

The announcement followed allegations that she had been leading the municipality from her sick bed since her election in the August municipal polls.

The ANC says Pannal failed "dismally to govern and thereby resigned".

"We know for a fact that the DA has been clueless in fulfilling their governance obligations for 100 days. As a result, the executive under this administration could not address the community of Mogale on the recent water crisis," party said in a statement.

'Incompetent leadership'

Additionally, the DA failed to present quarterly reports to the council as required by law, the ANC said.

The party is now demanding a council meeting to elect a new mayor.

"It is not in the best interest of our people to have incompetent leadership and thereby fail them in delivering crucial services"

Neither the DA nor ANC received an outright majority in the August 3 local elections.

The council elections surprised many with the DA winning the position of mayor and the ANC claiming the speaker position. The two parties have also been at loggerheads over the appointment of the acting municipal manager.
