ANC Women's League postpones national interfaith prayer day

Durban – The ANC Women’s League on Friday postponed its national interfaith prayer service and its ANC manifesto endorsement event which was scheduled to take place on Saturday.

ANCWL Secretary General Meokgo Matuba said in a statement the event was now expected to take place on May 7.

She said the event, which was expected to be attended by religious leaders and civil society, was intended to pray for peace and tolerance in the lead up to the 2016 municipal elections on August 3.

Meanwhile, a National Prayer Day and the launch of Africa month, hosted by government in Durban on Friday morning was also postponed at the last minute. President Jacob Zuma was expected to address the gathering.

While some sources speculated the event was postponed because the ANC failed to mobilise enough people to fill up the Kings Park Stadium, others said the event organisers failed to pay the stadium on time.

Presidency spokesperson Bongani Majola told News24 that the event had been postponed due to "insufficient time to ensure sound logistical preparations for the event of this magnitude".

“It will be organised at a later date to be announced in due course,” Majola said.

Zuma was expected to address civil society and religious leaders at the Kings Park Stadium in Durban at about 09:00 but by 8:30, no buses had arrived and the stadium stood empty.

This despite frantic preparations on Thursday to prepare the stadium for the event.

Late on Thursday the event was still listed on the president's programme for the next couple of weeks.

At the recent launch of the ANC's election manifesto in Port Elizabeth, addressed by Zuma, they battled to fill the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium.
