Durban – The ANC Youth League (ANCYL) in eThekwini on Friday called for the immediate resignation of the municipality's city manager S'bu Sithole.

There has been tumult in the city's leadership ranks with eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede this week making moves to suspend Sithole.

Sithole has only two weeks remaining in his contract and has reapplied for his job, even though Gumede had served him with a notice for the early termination of his contract.

The power to terminate Sithole's contract lies with the city's council.

In a press briefing on Friday, eThekwini ANCYL regional secretary Thinta Cibane said Sithole had "obstructed" youth development.

"Sithole has presented himself as a stumbling block to youth development. He has stopped taking instructions from the political leadership of the city that was voted into office during the recent local government elections," he said.

"The youth league will not tolerate anyone who does not prioritise the development of our people and the youth in particular. The idea that the city manager can blatantly refuse to implement decisions of his political principals is of great concern," he added.

Cibane applauded the move by Gumede to remove Sithole.
