Rustenburg – Four-year-old Thandi Talakase's hand was possibly torn off by an animal, and not chopped off, an autopsy has shown.

She was also probably suffocated, Vryburg police spokesperson Captain Charlize van der Linden told Netwerk24

The child went missing about a week ago, while playing in front of her house in Huhudi. The children she had been playing with were too young to be able to tell the police how Thandi had gone missing.

A young boy found her body half-hidden under some bushes on Monday while he was hunting.

There were no clear indications of sexual assault, but forensic tests were still to be performed.

"The community said it was a muti murder, but now it looks like her hand could have been torn off by an animal," Van der Linden said.

Thandi's parents, Refeilwe Talakase and Jonathan Khumalo, have been left devastated. She was their only child.

No suspects have been identified yet.

Thandi will be buried on Saturday.
