Johannesburg - A wood vendor has been blamed for a fire that spread through an animal shelter on Wednesday morning.

Randburg SPCA general manager Craig Rudman told News24 the fire started at 08:30, allegedly by one of the vendors selling wood outside. ‎

"We managed to contain it just before it could reach the animals. We contained it to the charity shop but unfortunately it jumped and set one of our containers on fire."

Redman said the fire department responded quickly to their call.

"The fire station cut through the container and everything went smoothly after that. The animals are safe."

SPCA staff said they had been inundated with calls and visits from the community.

"I just saw the news on Twitter and I rushed here to see what I could do," said local resident Natalie Smit.

"It's such a shame but I am happy to see that the animals weren't hurt through all of this."
