Johannesburg – ANC members in the Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB) metro area will now have to wait till January for their party's elective conference to take place, as branch structures are still waiting to be audited.

The region has already had to postpone its conference repeatedly because of auditing issues.

"Because we had to meet certain requirements constitutionally, we had many delays," Eastern Cape ANC spokesperson Oscar Mabuyane said on Friday.

"We are hoping that we can convene at the beginning of next year."

Mabuyane said the region was required to follow certain criteria, which meant that the branch general meetings had to be audited as well as the branch council meetings and the twice-yearly regional conferences in order to hold the elective conference.

"We met as the provincial executive committee (PEC) and we decided to postpone the elective conference till the end of January. We must first do an internal audit on branches and then only can we proceed with the election."

He admitted that branches in the Nelson Mandela Bay region were weakened by factional fighting, but said the PEC had confidence in their members heading into the local government elections.

"Our branches are not as good as we wish. We have branches of 300 members in a ward of 15 000. That is not positive. We want to improve that," he said.

The NMB regional elective conference has been postponed several times. In November, the ANC in the region announced that it would hold its elections before Christmas when the branches had been audited.
