A large vegetation fire broke out on the lower slopes of Table Mountain Friday evening, City of Cape Town fire services have confirmed.

Spokesperson Theo Layne, shortly before 18:30, told News24 that fire crews were on their way to the scene on Tafelberg Road.

He said no property was in danger and that water bombing by a helicopter was currently being carried out. The fire was being fanned by a strong south-easterly wind, he added.

The flames could be seen from as far away as the Foreshore.

The blaze comes five days after an inferno broke out on the other side of the mountain on Sunday, resulting in firefighters battling the blaze into the following day.

According to Layne, that fire was caused by a cooking fire.
