Cape Town - A woman was raped and killed in the rural Overberg town of Bredasdorp at the weekend, Western Cape police confirmed on Monday.

The body of the 22-year-old victim was found badly injured in the early hours of Saturday morning, said Captain FC van Wyk.

Preliminary investigations led to the arrest of a 20-year-old man shortly thereafter.

He was expected to appear in the Bredasdorp Magistrate’s Court later on Monday, facing charges of murder and rape.

Van Wyk said they were investigating the circumstances of the incident.

It was understood that the murder took place close to the spot where teenager Anene Booysen was attacked.

She was found raped and disembowelled in February 2013. She later died at the Tygerberg Hospital.

Her killer, Johannes Kana, was given two life sentences. His attempt to apply for leave to appeal against his conviction was denied by the Western Cape High Court.

Two years after Booysen's death, the body of 5-year-old Kayde Williams was found in a bushy area in the town after she was reported missing.

A few months after Williams was killed, 15-year-old Elda Jaftha was found dead under the bed of a 29-year-old man believed to be her boyfriend.

A "Safe Spaces" bench by the Rock Girl campaign was unveiled at the Bredasdorp Magistrate’s Court last year to honour the three girls.
