Cape Town - An off-duty police officer was shot and killed early on Monday morning in Wallacedene, Kraaifontein, while on his way to work, Western Cape police have confirmed.

The 35-year-old constable, stationed at the Sea Border Unit at Table Bay Harbour, was gunned down at 05:20 in Ngculu Street, police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Andre Traut said.

"The member, who was dressed in civilian clothes over his uniform, succumbed on the scene and the suspect or suspects fled with his official firearm. The investigation is conducted by the Hawks and as yet, no one has been arrested," he said.

Last month three officers were killed in Cape Town in a period of less than a week.

Constable Amanda Ladlokova was killed while she and a colleague were attending to a domestic violence complaint in Acacia Street, Philippi East, on November 22.

A woman came and asked them to help at a similar situation around the corner. When they arrived at the house after attending to the first complaint, someone opened fire on them.

Ladlokova was shot three times and died on the scene.

Her colleague was shot in the neck but played dead while he and Ladlokova were searched.

Their service pistols were stolen.

Police vow to fight back

Three armed men killed Constable Masibonge Mqwada, 33, and stole his car while he was dropping off a family member in Kraaifontein in the early hours of November 26.

Hours later, Constable Thandoxolo Ndiki, 30, was found lying on a pavement in Delft.

He had a gunshot wound to his upper body and was rushed to hospital, where he died.

His car was recovered in Muizenberg the next afternoon.

On Monday Traut said police were saddened by the loss of another officer.

"We vow to fight back at police killings with all our resources," he warned.

Traut urged anyone with information about the murder to phone Crime Stop on 08600 10111
