Durban - A 39-year-old man has died at a KwaZulu-Natal tissue mill after he was shot by a security guard, police said on Thursday.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane said the victim was at work at the Hygienic Tissue Mills in Pietermaritzburg when he got into a heated argument with a security guard.

"It is alleged that the victim attempted to stab the security [guard] and the [guard] shot and killed the victim. Police were called to attend and the security was arrested. His firearm was seized. He will appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate's Court soon."

Netcare 911 said paramedics arrived at the scene and found the man lying on the ground with a gunshot wound.

"Tragically, a man in his 30s died before our arrival, he was declared dead by the paramedics."
