Pietermaritzburg - Three brazen armed robbers attacked a security officer transporting money in a bustling Pietermaritzburg mall on Monday, making off with more than R300 000 cash.

A G4S Cash Solutions staff member, who is believed to have been delivering a large amount of money to the Symons Centre Capitec Bank branch, was accosted by a gang of armed men just after 10 am.

It is believed that as the guard was walking in the mall, with his partner waiting in the van, a robber put a gun to his head and demanded he lie on the floor.

The guard was stripped of his own firearm and the cash box, which is believed to have contained about R330 000.

The men fled through the mall into a taxi rank nearby.

According to G4S communications consultant Wendy Hardy, the security officer was attacked by four men armed with weapons.

“Due to the professional conduct of our officer and the technology used, we are thankful that no injuries were sustained or damage experienced by the customer,” Hardy said.

When The Witness arrived at the mall on Monday, police were trying to put the pieces of the investigation together by questioning the security officer and staff from the bank.

Pietermaritzburg police spokesperson Mthokozisi Ngobese said no arrests have yet been made.
