Cape Town – A group of pensioners arrested outside Parliament have been released, police said on Friday.

The group were forcefully removed after a two-day sit-in outside Parliament's gates. They refused to allow cars to enter.

On Friday, a group of younger protesters joined them and demanded access to the grounds.

Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said 51 people were arrested and released after a discussion between their legal representatives, police, and the National Prosecuting Authority.

The charges related to violations of the National Key Points Act and Road Traffic Act – disrupting a national key point and blocking the road.

Members of the group said they worked for the apartheid-era Ciskei Transport Corporation and SA Railways. When the new administration created new transport entities, their pensions disappeared. They said they wanted to get paid the money they were still owed.

Parliament secretary Gengezi Mgidlana said Parliament had not opened a case against the pensioners and did not intend to open one. He said they were talking to the pensioners to find a long-term solution.
