Johannesburg - A 35-year-old woman was arrested for allegedly assaulting her boyfriend while, in a separate incident, three robbers were nabbed after they allegedly stole rice from a supermarket, Johannesburg police said on Tuesday.

"Johannesburg central police arrested a 35-year-old female for assault with an intention to cause grievous bodily harm at a tavern," Captain Xoli Mbele said in a statement.

It is alleged that the woman used a broken bottle to hit her boyfriend, before she stabbed him in the street in central Johannesburg. The man is the father of two of her children.

An ambulance was called to the scene and the man was provided with medical treatment.

The woman was arrested shortly afterwards while she was at a tavern in the area.

She is to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court soon.

Meanwhile, on Monday morning, also in central Johannesburg, three people were arrested for business robbery after they broke into a supermarket and stole a "trolley filled with rice".

A security guard alerted police officials who were on patrol.

The police saw the men pushing the trolley.

The men ran away when they spotted the police vehicle cop car, but they were apprehended shortly afterwards. The rice was recovered, along with a bolt cutter and a hammer.

They are to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court.
