Bloemfontein – A horror accident on Sunday involving a bus carrying ANC supporters left at least 10 people dead in Winburg in the Free State.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring told News24 that indications are that the bus was returning from the ANC’s election manifesto launch at the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium in Port Elizabeth, when the bus driver lost control which caused the bus to roll off the highway.

Paramedics are still on the scene with reports coming in that at least 10 people have been killed while about 40 have been injured.

Emergency Response Services are still searching the bus for more fatalities.

“More information will be made available as it becomes clear, but at the moment the indication is that no other vehicle was involved.”

The exact cause of the accident is still unknown, but authorities are on the scene.

ANC national spokesperson, Zizi Kodwa, said in a statement that the party is saddened by the news of the accident.

"The ANC is still clarifying details about the accident and will issue further details once all pertinent information has been verified. Our thoughts are with the injured and bereaved at this time."
