Jeffrey's Bay - A 15-year old boy who got caught in the surf in the ocean at Beach Break in Jeffrey's Bay was saved by three Australian surfers on Monday afternoon.
According to National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Jeffrey's Bay station commander Rieghard Janse van Rensburg, they received reports of a drowning child. The child managed to get himself out of the ocean, but said his friend had disappeared under water.
"While responding to the scene, an eye-witnesses reported that the child who had reportedly disappeared under water, a 15 year-old male from Welkom, had been rescued from the surf by three Australian surfers," Janse van Rensburg said in a statement.
Reports indicate that the three Australian surfers, Mitchell Ellis, Nate Searle and Luca Stevenson, had come across the boy in the surf breaker line and grabbed him. They managed to get him to the beach where he was found to be in a critical condition.
"We placed the teenager on oxygen, a heated blanket and an emergency space blanket were applied and the Eastern Cape Government Health EMS arrived on the scene and they transported the teenager by ambulance to hospital in a stable condition for observation for secondary drowning and for continuing medical treatment," Janse van Rensburg added.
The boy is expected to make a full recovery.
