A guest author attending the Franschhoek Literary Festival in the Western Cape on Thursday evening was struck with a brick on her head and robbed of her handbag on Thursday night.

According to a Facebook post by Franschhoek Literary Festival, the victim was robbed, attacked and injured by three men.

Police confirmed the incident, saying that a 56-year-old female was robbed of her handbag after one male suspect struck the complainant with a brick on her head.

This happened round 19:30 in Akedemie Street Franschhoek, police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Andrè Traut said.

Traut said the matter is being investigated and that no arrests have been made yet.

The festival organisers said they would redouble their efforts to secure the village and their patrons' safety.

"The victim had every right to believe she was in a safe space, as would every festival goer," organisers said in a statement.

"The FLF requests all its patrons to be continually vigilant about their personal safety. Franschhoek may present itself as an idyll, but it faces the same issues as the whole of South Africa."

The organisers expressed their regret about the incident and said their thoughts were with the author and her family.
