Pretoria – An AWB leader and his associate were arrested for alleged illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, the Hawks said on Friday.

The 48-year-old Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging leader was allegedly found at a house in Vanderbijlpark with two rifles, two shotguns, two pistols, and 2 136 rounds of ammunition.

“The suspect claimed that he had bought the firearms at a house in Vereeniging,” Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said.

They arrested the second man, a 42-year-old AWB member, at a second address, in La Paradiso estate, Vanderbijlpark. He was allegedly found in possession of 306 live rounds for a .22 rifle, nine rifles and three pistols.

They were arrested on Wednesday. They were expected to appear in the Vereeniging Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

In an unrelated incident, three firearms and 22 rounds of ammunition, wrapped in plastic and hidden inside a stove, and a maroon Audi A1 reported stolen in Pinetown, were found in Dawn Park, Boksburg, in Gauteng.
