Cape Town - An axe-wielding man attacked a municipal law enforcement official in Ceres and then ran into a local bank where he was shot dead on Wednesday, Netwerk24 reports.

Police killed local tradesman Andre Faroo, 41, when he charged at them with the axe.

Local community policing forum chair Jan van der Merwe said he heard that Faroo tried to force a police van off the road earlier in the day.
“He then went to the police station where he hammered against a police vehicle with the axe. He went into the building, where he attacked an official with the axe before fleeing,” Van der Merwe said.

Police found him in the local Standard Bank shortly afterwards, the axe still in his hand.

He apparently stood with his bank card in his hand and asked the cashier to quickly help him “because he needs money”.
“They asked him to put down the axe, but he refused and charged at the police officers. A first shot was fired, but he didn’t stop. He was shot four times,” said Van der Merwe.
Faroo died in the bank.

The motive for the attack is unclear.
