Johannesburg - Three people, including a baby, have been killed in two separate shack fire incidents in Johannesburg, emergency rescue officials said on Sunday.

A one-year-old baby died in a fire which gutted 120 shacks and displaced over 1 000 people in Marlboro on Saturday night, Johannesburg Emergency Management Services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said in a statement.

The child succumbed to "smoke inhalation and also sustained burns all over the body," he said.

The cause of the fire was not yet known, but an investigation was underway.

Meanwhile, on Sunday morning, paramedics were called to the scene of a shack fire in Dan Pienaar Drive in Eikenhof, in the South of Johannesburg, said ER24 spokesperson Annine Siddall.

She said that, when the fire was extinguished, paramedics entered the shack.

"Once it was safe to enter, ER24 paramedics found two bodies burnt beyond recognition."

An official investigation into the incident was underway and relief efforts for the victims were being organised.

Mulaudzi urged residents to be very careful in using heating devices as a cold front rolls towards the city.
