A baby who was found dumped in a dustbin in Durban has been declared dead, paramedic services said on Thursday.

Rescue Care spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said that paramedics rushed to the scene in Victoria Embankment in the city centre on Thursday.

"A baby girl was found wrapped in plastic. Bystanders showed paramedics where the baby was. Unfortunately, the baby was declared deceased on [the] scene."

Jamieson said the cause of death was yet to be determined.

Police will investigate further.
