Tzaneen – Bail was denied for a self-proclaimed prophet accused of raping four girls in his church in Burgersdorp near Tzaneen, Limpopo police said on Wednesday afternoon.

Pastor Confidence Monyela, 32, appeared in the Lenyenye Magistrate's Court on Wednesday on five charges of rape and one charge of sexual assault, police spokesperson Moatshe Ngoepe said in a statement.

Monyela allegedly raped four girls, aged between 12 and 16, between December 2016 and August 2017.

Ngoepe said Monyela is believed to have raped the victims when he invited them individually to come to the church for prayer.

While the girls were praying, the pastor would attack and rape them, Ngoepe said.

Monyela was arrested in August after one of the girls reported him to police.

The case was postponed to September 8 for further investigation. Monyela remains in police custody.
