Durban – In a thinly-veiled attack on EFF leader, Julius Malema, KwaZulu-Natal Premier Senzo Mchunu on Wednesday condemned those who made inflammatory statements under the guise of freedom of speech.

"We think that calling for the removal of a sitting president through a barrel of a gun is opportunistic, reckless and shows immaturity. A ballot box is the only weapon that must be used," said Mchunu.

The premier made the remarks at a Freedom Day celebration event at the Embuzweni Sports Field in Ladysmith.

His statements come a day after police Minister Nathi Nhleko's announcement that the Hawks would be investigating Malema's statement in which he said the EFF would remove the government "through the barrel of a gun".

Mchunu said: "There are a few trigger-happy and stubborn elements which are responsible for a wave of crime. They will take advantage of such inflammatory statements thereby reversing the gains we have made."

He said KwaZulu-Natal residents had worked hard to ensure peace and stability and they should protect that.
