Polokwane - Police in Limpopo say they have increased public order policing in Bela-Bela after the mayor's car and a municipal building were torched.

Residents in the area went on a rampage on Tuesday setting fire to the mayor's car and a building in protest against the council's decision to add a R500 basic fee to electricity rates.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said ten people were arrested for public violence, malicious damage of property and arson.

He said the situation was calm on Wednesday morning with additional members of the public order policing unit and Nyalas deployed in the area.

"We have increased the number of public order police in the area, and will remain there until the situation is under control," said Mojapelo.

Mojapelo said he could not confirm allegations of shop looting.

"We don't have case reported, and we cannot confirm the incident."
