Johannesburg - A 53-year-old game farmer was killed in Rooiberg near Bela Bela on Saturday morning, said Limpopo police.

Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the farmer was asleep when intruders broke into his house and overpowered him.

"Preliminary investigation showed that the deceased may have been strangled, however a postmortem is still to be conducted to determine the cause of death," said Ledwaba.

The attackers fled with a safe.

It was understood that a woman who was in the house and a farm worker who was on the property were not injured in the incident.

They alerted police to the incident.

"A search for the suspects was launched and the search yielded positive results when a 29-year-old suspect was apprehended at Bela Bela," said Ledwaba.

"The stolen safe with contents namely [a] firearm, ammunition and undisclosed amount of cash were also recovered in the bushes outside Bela Bela."

The suspect was expected to appear in the Bela Bela Magistrate's Court on Monday where he was to face a charge of murder and possession of suspected stolen property.

Police were still searching for more suspects.
