Blade Nzimande to meet vice chancellors

Johannesburg – Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande will discuss ways of ending protests and unrest at universities when he meets vice chancellors on Thursday.

The use of police on campuses would be one of the topics of discussion, his spokesperson Khaye Nkwanyana said.

Nzimande met Police Minister Nathi Nhleko at Wits University last week to discuss ways of ensuring the safety of staff and students.

The two agreed that while it was not desirable to have police at universities, they would have to be deployed in the event of a strike or protest, Nkwanyana said.

There had been several violent clashes at several universities in the past two weeks. The North West University's administration building was burnt down last week.

"The reality is that security is not equipped to handle crowd control.  In the event where there is a protest they will be deployed until those protests are over. It may take a week or more,” he said.

Speaking at Wits University, Nhleko said they needed to find ways of enforcing the law and "re-cultivating" the rule of law at tertiary institutions.
